Renowned dance musician and DJ Tom Middleton is to release the official anthem of the 10:10 climate change campaign, an uplifting call to arms inspired by his concern over environmental issues and enthusiasm for the work being done by the movement.
Tom joins the 60,000 individuals already pledging to reduce their carbon emissions
by 10% this year since the campaign’s launch last September. The musician, who has enjoyed massive success under the monikers Jedi Knights, Global Communication and Cosmos, as well as his own name, wrote 10:10 in December, after reading about the work being done by 10:10 online.
Tom says: “As soon as I heard about 10:10 I felt an urgency to join in and make a difference through my music. Most of the lifestyle changes recommended by 10:10,
like using public transport, or switching to energy efficient bulbs, are simple but make a massive difference. Personally I’ve become a lot more conscious of food wastage, and I’ve become a big advocate of wearing extra layers rather than cranking up my heating. For the last few years I’ve also ditched cabs in favour of using the tube or the bus.”
Asked how he squares his life as an international DJ with campaigning against climate change, Tom says: “I’m fortunate that I get to travel the world, and yes it’s often by plane. But what’s great about 10:10 is that I can still do my bit. The campaign’s about making small changes – it’s not asking you to give up flying completely or overhaul your entire life. We all need to wake up and make a difference in our own way. Recently I played a gig at a London club and was horrified when I discovered they’d booked me a cab from my hotel which was 100 yards away.”
Tom adds: “10:10 came about late last year. I’d been giving a lot of thought to climate change and was experimenting with a tolling church bell as a pulse for a track. It struck me that the bell had a sense of urgency to it and felt like a warning, a call to action. The tune is 10 minutes and 10 seconds long, and there’s a feeling of building tension. It’s been brilliantly received in clubs and has a real anthemic quality to it and
I’m proud for it to be an anthem for 10:10. If this music can inspire music fans to make simple lifestyle changes then job done. We haven’t run out of time just yet... but the clock is ticking.”
10:10 Campaign Director Eugenie Harvey, says: “I’m ecstatic Tom has donated this track to the campaign. His involvement in 10:10 will bring an added dimension to the project and help galvanise the support of clubbers and music fans across the globe. Every revolution needs an anthem and Tom’s 10:10 track has all the energy and dynamism of the 10:10 campaign itself.”
